About the event
Join us for our Summer Solstice Celebration on Sunday, June 23, 2024, from 6 to 9 PM, as we gather for a potluck to honour and celebrate sacred Grandfather Sun, who moves into another cycle of change, reminding us of Mother Earth's gentle movement around him.
Many Indigenous cultures braid spirituality and science together. Observing the cycles of the sun, moon, stars, and planets is integral to practices like agriculture, fishing, hunting, and gathering. Grandfather Sun and Sister Moon are vital to the sustainability of our food systems and all living things. Many Indigenous creation stories feature the stars, including Grandfather Sun. We honour and thank the guardians of this ancestral knowledge for preserving these important seeds of our collective memories, reminding us of the importance of change and how our bodies, minds, and spirits prepare for the season ahead.
Historically, Summer Solstice traditions involved gathering with loved ones to celebrate the return of light, life, and fertility at the peak of the growing season. Around the world, people have marked solstices with monuments, calendars, spiritual practices, and celebrations. Today, we continue to celebrate with feasts, singing, dancing, music, bonfires, crafts, and delicious food and drinks. Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, marks the peak of the Solar year, with the sun at its highest point. In ancient times, this event was indeed something to celebrate.
Traditionally, people celebrated renewal, fertility, and life at the peak of the growing season, the potential for a good harvest, and inner and outer abundance. Summer Solstice symbolizes ascension and rebirth or the return of light on our planet and within each one of us. This is a time to reflect on your life's path and spiritual journey. Solstice reminds us that what happens on Earth and in the heavens reflects what happens within us: "As Above, So Below." Spiritually, the sun's light is akin to the light within each of us and the Earth itself.
Join us as we share in food, drink and ceremony, to welcome Grandfather Sun's light.
